Figma SP-063 Venus de Milo - The Table Museum

The Venus de Milo – she is certainly well known, especially because of her missing arms which are subject of many speculations. The slightly larger-than-life statue was found on the Greek Island Milos in the ruins of a building that might have once been a theater. It was assumed that the portrayed woman was supposed to be Venus, goddess of love and beauty. In the closer vicinity several other pieces were found, including two arms which might have belonged to it. The left hand was holding an apple, the right one would have touched the cloth around the woman's hips. Today it is assumed that the arms really belonged to the statue, but back then this possibility was dismissed because the arms were not worked out in the same way as the rest of the figure. By now it has been found out that sculptors sometimes saved themselves the trouble if they thought the pieces were not going to be so well visible anyway for an observer standing below. For this figma those very arms were taken into consideration, so they are not just the result of the manufacturer's imagination. Of course you can, as usual for figures of the Table Museum, try out other possible positionings of the arms and have your funny way with an important piece of art. Visiting a museum has never been so interesting!
