The Rising of the Shield Hero (Tate no Yūsha no Nariagari) was written by Aneko Yusagi and first appeared in 2012 as a web novel on the platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō. Since 2013, Media Factory has published the story as a light novel under its MF Books imprint, with illustrations by Seira Minami; 22 volumes were released up to June 2019.
At its centre is Naofumi Iwatani, who is summoned to a fantasy world together with three other heroes and takes up the role of the Shield Hero. Raphtalia fights at his side. The series is dark fantasy isekai: it turns the invincible-hero pattern around and tells of a hard-won rise.
Aiya Kyu has drawn the manga adaptation since 2014. The studio Kinema Citrus launched the anime in January 2019, and further seasons followed in 2022, 2023 and 2025. This page carries figures as well as light novels and manga for the series.
