Black Rock Shooter began in December 2007 as an illustration by the artist huke. Ryo of supercell wrote a song for it with the voice of Hatsune Miku; the video, with artwork by huke, appeared on Nico Nico Douga in June 2008. The title character is a black-haired girl with a bright blue eye and a cannon on her arm.
The song grew into a whole world: the OVA by the studio Ordet came out in 2010, the eight-episode TV series followed in 2012, and Black Rock Shooter: Dawn Fall, with twelve episodes, in 2022. There are also games, among them the mobile game Black Rock Shooter FRAGMENT from Good Smile Company, which tells its own story apart from Dawn Fall.
