Works

Masamune Shirow's 1989 cyberpunk manga about Motoko Kusanagi and the special unit Section 9, known from the film and Stand Alone Complex.

More about Ghost in the Shell
Ghost in the Shell began as a manga by Masamune Shirow, published from May 1989 by Kodansha in Young Magazine Zōkan Kaizokuban. At its centre is Motoko Kusanagi, who investigates with her unit Section 9 in a world of networks and cyberware.

In 1995 Mamoru Oshii adapted the story as a feature film at Production I.G. The television series Stand Alone Complex followed in 2002, directed by Kenji Kamiyama with music by Yoko Kanno. It is a story of its own alongside the manga and the film.

The AI-controlled combat robots belong to this world as well: as Fuchikoma they appear in the manga as early as 1989, as Tachikoma they define the series. Alongside figures of Motoko Kusanagi, there are model kits of these think tanks.
