A model kit is a figure in its raw state. The parts sit on plastic frames, the runners, and are cut out, cleaned up and assembled following the instruction manual. A finished figure comes painted and assembled out of the box; a kit only becomes one at the workbench.
It began with Gunpla (Gundam plastic model): in 1980 Bandai released the first kit for Mobile Suit Gundam. Modern kits are mostly snap-fit. The parts press together without glue and are already moulded in colour; painting, panel lining and decals remain optional.
Bandai sorts Gunpla into grades that set scale and effort: HG and RG at 1/144, MG usually at 1/100, PG at 1/60. RG fits an inner frame into the small scale. Besides mecha, anime characters come as kits too.
